At the beginning of the sixteenth century future Piazza di Spagna was already a fundamental reference point for visitors; starting from here, you could reach ponte Sant'Angelo, the entrance to the Vatican city and therefore St. Peter's Basilica. The piazza, church and famous Scalinata di Spagna (Spanish Steps) have long provided a gathering place for foreigners. Built with a legacy from the French in 1725, but named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See (which is still located in the piazza), the steps lead to the French church, Trinità dei Monti. The steps are famous and hundreds of people, foreigners and romans gather here every day to seat and watch other people; in May each year the steps are decorated with pink azaleas. In the piazza is the boat-shaped fountain called the Barcaccia, believed to be by Pietro Bernini, father of the famous Gian Lorenzo. The area is also a famous shopping area, with the commercial Via del Corso and the exclusives Via Condotti, Via Borgognona, Via della Vite.
